Red Meat is Not as Healthy as We Are Told

This report filed by the BBC confirms what has long been rumoured, mans love affair with red meat is doing us no good.

Despite the spruiking of Sam Neil and Sam Kekovich, red meat is not bringing us the benefits that they profess. In fact it is almost certainly a key contrbutor to early deaths from heart disease, cancer and strokes.

And “an essential part of the diet 3 or 4 times a week.” I think not. Only if heart disease and premature death are also essential to the evolution of the species.

Leave the discoveries to the scientists Sam. Here are the real facts.

A chemical found in red meat helps explain why eating too much steak, mince and bacon is bad for the heart, say US scientists.

A study in the journal Nature Medicine showed that carnitine in red meat was broken down by bacteria in the gut.

This kicked off a chain of events that resulted in higher levels of cholesterol and an increased risk of heart disease.

Dieticians warned there may be a risk to people taking carnitine supplements.

There has been a wealth of studies suggesting that regularly eating red meat may be damaging to health.

In the UK, the government recommends eating no more than 70g of red or processed meat a day – the equivalent of two slices of bacon.

Saturated fat and the way processed meat is preserved are thought to contribute to heart problems. However, this was not thought to be the whole story.

“Start Quote

I would strongly recommend that unless you’re a vegetarian or vegan, there is a potential risk from taking L-carnitine, lecithin, choline or betaine supplements in an attempt to ward off cognitive decline or improve fat metabolism ”

Catherine Collins Dietitian

“The cholesterol and saturated fat content of lean red meat is not that high, there’s something else contributing to increases in cardiovascular risk,” lead researcher Dr Stanley Hazen told the BBC.
Gut bugs

Experiments on mice and people showed that bacteria in the gut could eat carnitine.

Carnitine was broken down into a gas, which was converted in the liver to a chemical called TMAO.

In the study, TMAO was strongly linked with the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease and death.

Dr Hazen, from the Cleveland Clinic, said TMAO was often ignored: “It may be a waste product but it is significantly influencing cholesterol metabolism and the net effect leads to an accumulation of cholesterol.

“The findings support the idea that less red meat is better.

“I used to have red meat five days out of seven, now I have cut it way back to less than once every two weeks or so.”

He said the findings raised the idea of using a probiotic yogurt to change the balance of bacteria in the gut.

Reducing the number of bacteria that feed on carnitine would in theory reduce the health risks of red meat.

Vegetarians naturally have fewer bacteria which are able to break down carnitine than meat-eaters.

More at Red meat chemical ‘damages heart’, say US scientists

It is not only the meat itself that is a problem. Sam Kekovich implores you to chuck a lamb chop on the barbie, that could make matters worse. Check out our report for making barbecue food safer.

Sam Kekovich says it is Un-Australian not to eat lamb, does that mean it is Un-Australian to avoid heart disease and live longer.

Looking after your health is Australian or at least it should be. Don’t be fooled by these guys telling you that the old ways are the best. They were the best, when we didn’t no any better, now we know more. That’s evolution.

Don’t forget that red meat is also dangerous to the planet. Millions of acres of rainforest have been torn down to make way for grazing cattle. This means that there is more CO2 in the air and to make matter worse the cattle turn the green stuff they eat into methane which is even worse for the atmosphere than CO2.

If you must eat red meat, cut it back to the 70G a day, as recommended in the report, or save it up for a decent size cut once per week or once every two weeks. You know it makes sense.

Wealth Inequality Effects Health and Life Expectancy

We include this video on this site not only because we would like to highlight the inequality of wealth distribution, but also because there is no doubt that the wealthier are healthier. The rich eat better, get better medical care, have more leisure time to exercise and undoubtedly live longer and happier lives.

It is time that something was done about the inequality and I believe that the availability of social media and viral campaigns can help us to achieve a more fair distribution, to use a an Aussie expression “A fair shake of the sauce bottle”

The video below specifically refers to the distribution of wealth in America, but I have no doubt that situation is similar in all first world countries and probably much worse in countries without democracy and those suffering under famine and war.

Watch and share, you know it makes sense.

And many of you will be surprised to find out where a huge amount of that global wealth is spent. It is spent on war and “defence”. Why is it spent on war and the military? Because war makes lots of money for some people and the victors gain more money and power to perpetuate the status quo of the few holding most of the money and the authority to control and influence the rest with the power that it brings to them. It is an ever increasing circle of misery for many and joy for the few.

“Nowadays, we are confronted by a huge gap between rich and poor. This is not only morally wrong, but practically a mistake. It leads to the rich living in anxiety and the poor living in frustration, which has the potential to lead to more violence. We have to work to reduce this gap. It’s truly unfair that some people should have so much while others go hungry.”

The Dalai Lama

To prove this is not only the case in America we have included a report relating to the UK Sunday Times rich list. This details not only who holds the bulk of the wealth but also in which industries they work.

As much of British prime industry was destroyed during the Thatcher era, not surprisingly many of those that head the rich list are employed in the banking, hedge funds and private equity industries that created the financial crisis of recent years. Also, unsurprisingly, they have not been held accountable for that. When you have the money you have the power and that means you do not pay.

Do what you can to turn it around, even if it is only spreading the word and that is as easy as pressing a button or pasting a link on social media these days.

The Parable of the Rich Man’s Biscuits.

A divide and conquer tactic that has been used for centuries and is still working for the over privileged today

A rich man, a worker and a poor man are sitting around a table. On the table are 12 biscuits. The rich man takes 11 of the biscuits, and says to the worker: “that poor man wants your biscuit.”

This is the strategy that the media uses every day to point the blame for the problems of the world at immigrants, the unemployed and those on benefits.

The Media is the Tool that the Rich use to Promote their Propaganda

“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” – Malcolm X

If you still do not believe that your television is used to spread propaganda then this video will open your eyes.

Food for Thought

Numerous stories in the press, both the printed media and Television, like to lay the blame for working people’s woes on what they like to call scroungers – the unemployed, immigrants, people on welfare, dole bludgers, the list goes on. This is a perfect example of the divide and conquer technique that we described above in The Parable of the Rich Man’s Biscuits.

Professor Thomas Piketty has been described as “the most important thinker of his generation”. His book Capital in the Twenty-First Century has ignited arguments about power and money. It questions the myth at the heart of American life – that capitalism improves the quality of life for everyone. This is just not so, says Piketty, and he makes his case in a clear and rigorous manner that debunks everything that capitalists believe about the ethical status of making money.

It has been described as “one of the watershed books in economic thinking” and the Economist reported that Piketty’s work fundamentally rewrote 200 years of economic thinking on inequality. You can pick it up at Amazon in Hardback or Kindle format, by clicking the link below.

Benefits of Juicing and Daily Deals on Juicers and Juice Recipes

It is a fact of life that most people do not eat their recommended daily amount of fruit and vegetables; as a result products like V8 have come on to the market. V8 contains a mixture of fruits and vegetables so that people who are not getting their required vitamins and minerals in their food can try to acquire them by drinking the juice.

However by drinking packaged products like V8 you miss out on many of the benefits of fresh juice. In order to have a shelf life these products must be pasteurised and contain preservatives that you do not want to put into your body. The processes that the packaged juices go through may destroy the very vitamins that you are trying to obtain.

It’s very easy these days to juice at home. There are a wide variety of juicers on the market that can do the job in no time at all and in many cases you do not even have to cut up or peel the fruit. You just put it in whole and the juice goes straight into your cup in seconds.

Also by juicing at home you can make the juices that really suit your dietary needs and personal taste.

The benefits you will get from different fruits and vegetables are wide and varied and widely acknowledged. For example Cabbage juice has been found to treat peptic ulcers. Keracyanin, found in the pigment of Cherries, can ease gout attacks and increase movement in the fingers and toes. Citrus fruits aid in the treatment of a wide variety of ailments and Cranberry juice can prevent kidney stones and urinary tract diseases. Proanthocyanidins are found in the pit of Grapes, so when you make Grape juice using the whole grape, skin, pips and all you are releasing and consuming these antioxidants that are more potent than vitamins C or E. Grapes also contain trans-resveratol which can reduce the risk of heart attack.

Many health professionals and dieticians recommend juices for prevention and curing of Cancer. In many instances some of the best nutrients are not released when the fruit or vegetable is consumed cooked, solid or whole. But juicing breaks down and releases these nutrients that can be so beneficial in the treatment and prevention of that horrible disease that claims so many.

I could fill a book with these examples and maybe I will, but in the meantime just understand that fruit and vegetables are nature’s medicine and making juice from them is the easiest and tastiest way to get them into your body.

Don’t forget that you can mix your fruit and vegetables in the juicer in order to create a cocktail that tastes great to you and at the same time treats or prevents any condition that may concern you. Or you can simply drink juice to give you a lift in vitality in your day.

If you are not that adventurous in creating your own fruit and veg cocktails, there are many recipes available, both in books and on the Internet and we will list some of them below.

Bargain Juicers and Juicer Recipes

Below we have detailed a range of juicers at bargain prices, the video above reviews one of the most popular, the Breville BJE200XL 700 Watt Compact Juice Fountain. So get in quick, pick up a juicer and a recipe book and start reaping the benefits of your own fresh daily juice.

700W Centrifugal Juicer

With a 700 watt motor and two speed settings, this efficient juicer works for whatever you wish to juice. Its low speed setting is suitable for juicing soft fruits and vegetables, while its high speed setting is perfect for juicing harder fruits and vegetables.

Uses a pressing and squeezing action to extract maximum liquid while retaining all of the healthy nutrients.

Cold Press juicers are widely believed to extract and retain more of the nutrients from your fruit and vegetables than conventional juicers and are recommended by organisations like the Gerson Institute which specialises in alternative, non-toxic treatment for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.

Conventional juicers use fast spinning blades which can heat up the juice and reduce its nutritional value. However the price of Cold Press Juicers is often too much for many budgets, but this model is a breakthrough and right now you can pick it up for less than the price of many conventional juicers.

Ovela Fruit Infuser Jug

Ovela Fruit Infuser Bottle

Add refreshing flavour to every drink with the Ovela Fruit Infuser Bottle. The healthy and natural alternative to cordials, the infuser bottle lets you combine fresh fruit with water, tea or soft drink.

Lose weight in the dark

Here are few interesting little tidbits to kick us off. A recent study has suggested that sleeping with the light on can make you put on weight. Yeah, it may protect you from the bogey man, but you could end up twice his size. The study used two groups of mice; one was kept in total darkness while the other was exposed to dim light. Both were given the same amount of food, but the group that was exposed to the dim light had gained 50% more weight after 8 weeks. They also showed signs of pre-diabetes. It is believed that the light exposure may effect levels of melatonin, a hormone that effects metabolism.

So put out the lights, close the total block curtains and make sure you have no bright alarm clock lights, or the like, at night and you could be on your way to that svelte look you are after.

More bad news for those who love the nightlife, people who got to bed earlier consume on average 248 calories a day less. A recent study says that people who stay up late not only eat more, but they are drawn to bad food choices, eating twice as much junk food and half as much fruit and vegetables. Researchers think that a late sleep-wake cycle may encourage the packing on of pounds because it throws the body out of its natural rhythm of sleeping at night and eating during the day, when bodies are more active.

Dr. Maoshing Ni, PhD, author of Second Spring advises that eating late is also detrimental to a good nights sleep. He suggests eating no later than 7 p.m. to help free up your liver to perform its daily detox. Otherwise your body’s resources are busy digesting when you should be resting.

So, in summary, eat early, go to bed early and make sure it is completely dark in there. It looks like that old adage of early to bed early to rise really does make you healthier. I will continue my research to see if it makes you wealthier and wise.

If you are going to take diet and exercise advice from anyone, then it may as well be from a god, or at least a man who played the son of a god.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson took on his own legendary labours, in order to get his body ready to play the role of Hercules, in the 2014 film of the same name. Here’s how the web reported his impressive workload and dedication to the task.

“For different roles my condition and training and diet does alter,” The Rock says in an interview on Bodybuilding.com. “Depending on the role, it will really dictate the type of training I do. For ‘Hercules,’ it was a 22-week diet, while for ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ it was about a 14-week diet, and for ‘Pain & Gain’ I wanted to come out looking bulky, big, and dangerous, so we adjusted accordingly.”

How to Workout at Home

Do you really need to go to a gym to get fit?

Join a Gym

There are many advantages to going to a gym to get fit, they have all of the equipment that you need to start off with.

At a gym you will probably be coached by a personal trainer who can put together a “personal” fitness plan for you.

Many people find that the discipline of leaving the house, or work, to go to a gym helps in maintaining a fitness regime. As does working out with other people for some.

So, if you are looking for any of those things, by all means sign up for a gym membership and a personal trainer and go for it.

Don’t Join a Gym

On the other hand there are some drawbacks and it really is a case of different strokes for different folks.

Some people do not have a regular schedule that allows them to be at a gym at the specified time once, twice or several times a week.

Many people sign up and do not go to the gym, which can be expensive, as most gyms will not refund your membership. The same is true of personal trainers; they do not come cheap either.

By the way, beware of personal trainers that are not expensive, as it probably means your training is not that personal. He or she has probably written the same workout for hundreds of people before you and will just let you get on with it, after an initial session.

Another drawback for some of us is that we do not enjoy the idea of training with other people around and watching, fearing that we might be judged by them.

So if any of those issues sound familiar to you, do not worry there are lots of ways to get fit at home. You do not have to buy all of the expensive equipment that they have at the gym. You can do lots exercises using your own body weight, or with the aid of some basic low priced items.

Ab workouts

Everyone wants a flat stomach and washboard abs right?

Well the good news is that you do not need a lot of equipment to get them.

But here’s a reality check, you will not get them from exercise alone. Diet plays a big part in displaying that 6 pack. You see, if you did all of the sit ups and crunches you could count, you would build some strong abdominal muscles, but if your diet is wrong they would be behind the fat that your body stores in that area.

Now for those abs. There are a wide variety of exercises that you can do and a wide variety is what you need to keep you interested and motivated.

Everyone knows about the basic sit up, or crunch, as it’s more often called these days. But there are a whole lot of crunches to address different abdominal muscles and vary degrees of intensity.

You can do crunches with you legs straight, bent or inclined. You can do them on the floor, a bench, a fit ball or suspended on an ankle grip. And don’t forget to include twisting crunches for those side abs or obliques.

Fortis Ab Wheel

The Ab Wheel works by allowing you to perform roll outs, for which you have to engage all of your abdominal, lower back and pelvic floor muscles. The workout can be hard, but the results are worth it!

Core Training

Core strength and core training are buzz words these days, you must have heard of them. What do they mean?

Well they mean training the core muscles of the back and abdomen. This provides a great platform to build your fitness on. We should all focus on our core strength before concentrating on the arms, legs or anything else. A strong core can help prevent injury, especially back injury and can even help those who already have back injuries to recover and prevent future flare ups.

If you suffer with an existing back problem check out Exercises to Relieve Your Sciatica Symptoms

Stability is another word that is often bandied around in relation to core training. When performing any exercise it is obviously easier on a stable surface, like the floor. But once you have grasped the basics of that exercises you can make it more challenging by adding a degree of instability, like a fit ball.

The benefit of working out on an unstable surface is that it forces you to use more muscles, so that you maintain your balance and those are the core muscles.

Fitness disciplines like Yoga and Pilates improve your strength, stability and flexibility based on these principles and use very little equipment, except some basics like a fitball and mat

Fortis 65cm Fitness Gym Ball

The Fitness Gym Ball is one of the most versatile pieces of fitness equipment around. You can use it for crunches, twists, push ups, stability exercises and more! Just about any body-weight exercise can be adapted to the Gym Ball in order to work the core and the rest of the body simultaneously.

Fortis Rotating Push Up Grips

Get even more out of your push ups. The Fortis Rotating Push Up Grips are perfect for this – they add an element of instability to the exercise, which makes you work even harder.

Because of the unstable surface of the Push Up Grips, you engage more of the muscles in your arms, chest, shoulders, back and abs. You get a full upper-body workout just by using your bodyweight and the Grips.

Planking

No, not the weird craze that was popular a few years ago where people photographed themselves lying on all sorts of strange surfaces. This is a fantastic core exercise. It looks pretty easy, but it ain’t!

All you need to do is hold this position, or pose, that’s all nothing else. But if you take on the 30 day plankingchallenge you will find it’s not as easy as it looks, but it will strengthen your lower back, develop your core muscles, the abs, back, hips and butt. Which will help you avoid injuries and encourage good posture.

The 30 Day Planking challenge. Just strike the pose and hold it. Here’s the schedule

Arms, Shoulders and Chest

Building strong impressive biceps, triceps and pecs can be achieved with body weight exercises such as press ups and chin ups. But most people will include some weights and resistance equipment to push things along in this area. Barbells and dumbbells are good for bicep curls and resistance equipment helps in developing the triceps, shoulders and pectorals.

Fortis 24kg Adjustable SmartBell

Dumbbells are great for working out, but a complete set of traditional dumbbells is expensive and can take up valuable space. The Fortis 24kg Adjustable SmartBell is equivalent to 15 different weights, the SmartBell allows you to gradually increase your strength, or adjust weights for different exercises quickly without wasting time or energy between sets.

Fortis 18kg Adjustable Kettlebell

Fortis Door Gym Set

If you want a home gym that won’t get in your way, all you need is a door frame and the Fortis Door Gym Set. The Door Gym’s power cords provide resistance equivalent to up to 90kg! You can change the cords to deliver the right amount of resistance for your strength level, and increase as you see yourself getting stronger.

Included hand and ankle grips enable you to perform hundreds of different exercises to strengthen both the upper and lower body. Bicep curls, chest fly, lat pull down, shoulder press, squats, lunges, crunches and more are possible with the Door Gym

Size

Lastly let’s talk about size. How big do you want to get?

Some guys want to build huge muscles, whereas most women do not want to have big muscles, but want to look slim, fit and toned.

This is a personal choice and choice is very much involved in getting there. Working out alone will not make you big. Those guys that you see in the pictures in body building magazines pump a lot of iron, a lot of iron. They also follow a very dedicated and strict diet, involving a lot of calories and no fat, in order to achieve that look.

So never worry about putting on too much muscle. But you should look at your diet to make sure it is healthy, balanced and focused towards you body image goals. All the exercise in the world will not make up for junk food at every meal and junk food will not give you the energy that you need to do the training you want to do anyway.

Review: ‘Jack and Jill’ Go Up the Hill to Find Product Placement and a Moronic …

The initial moments of Jack and Jill, a new comedy in which Adam Sandler plays twins, filled me with a small measure of hope. The opening montage of twins talking about their relationships was a nice touch. For its first few minutes, Sandler’s drag routine was actually funny. Maybe this wouldn’t be the cavalcade of self-parodying garbage that its trailer seemed to promise.

Alas, poor Sandler, ’twas not to be. After all, this is a Happy Madison production, ensconced in Dennis Dugan land, where once-young comic actors fast approaching middle age still make the same basic movies they were making fifteen years ago. Only now, they movies are worse.

Sandler’s the ring leader of this motley company of thespians, which includes regulars Nick Swardson, Allen Covert and Tim Meadows, as well as stalwart Rob Schneider, who’s credited on IMDb but who I don’t recall actually being in the movie.

Sandler deserves a lot of credit for being loyal to his friends. It’s an admirable trait and a rare one in Hollywood. Somehow, he roped Al Pacino into things this time around, so good on him for that.

But man oh man, why did he think playing cross-gender twins was a good idea? As Jack and Jill Sadelstein, siblings brought together for the holidays, the actor combines his familiar everyman shtick with a drag act that becomes so excruciatingly unpleasant it inspires involuntary shudders and post-traumatic nightmares.

His Jill is a giant ball of close-minded neuroses, unfiltered yapping and unhygienic personal habits. The movie treats her with sneering condescension. Time and again, the screenplay by veteran writer Steve Koren reminds us how repulsive she is, how utterly unattractive and, well, dude-like. She’s a nightmarish, monstrous caricature of a New York Jewish stereotype, the poor man’s Linda Richman with major gas problems and a propensity for “dropping chimichanga bombs.” No man wants her, she complains, and really, we can’t blame them.

There’s not much of a narrative here and only the vaguest outline of a plot. Jill visits Jack and his family, including wife Erin (Katie Holmes) and their two kids, and stays indefinitely. At the same time, ad agency honcho Jack needs Al Pacino (playing a heightened version of himself) to agree to a Dunkin Donuts endorsement. At a Lakers game, Pacino is instantly stricken by Jill, in whom he sees a kindred spirit, the Dulcinea to his Don Quixote, as the movie tells us innumerable times.

So, yes, the entire flick is one long corporate shill for the omnipresent donut chain. Royal Caribbean gets to feel the warm glow of the endorsement spotlight as well. And yes, if you do somehow find your way to this movie, you weren’t dreaming: Al Pacino really does show up to a bar dressed as the Man of La Mancha. He really does do battle with a ceiling fan. He also (spoiler alert, I guess) refers to “Scarface” in a rap about Dunkin Donuts, as if he wanted to make this spectacle even sadder than it already was.

I’ll never understand what could inspire a legend to participate in this dreck. Sandler is by all accounts a nice guy and he’s probably very persuasive, but that doesn’t quite explain this. Yet there the Oscar-winning icon is, tickle torturing the star while Sandler plays Jack dressed in drag and pretending to be Jill.

The movie is so misshapen it’s barely even a movie, but more of a one-joke gag reel filled with walk-ons and other brief appearances from the usual friends of Sandler (John McEnroe, Dan Patrick etc.). It’s a lot of witless lowest common denominator humor combined with excruciatingly broad characterizations, extraordinary condescension and a lazily applied moral that’s completely unearned.

In that sense, Jack and Jill has a lot in common with much of Sandler’s recent output, which has increasingly begun to feel like the work of a man who has stopped trying to make movies worth seeing and started chasing the easy profit. Movies such as the recent Just Go with It and Grown Ups are more slapdash, forced and, well, amateurish than Sandler’s earliest output.

There’s a method to the madness in Billy Madison, for example, with Sandler’s performance an avant garde, performance art rendition of suspended adolescence that carries the movie through its unfocused peaks and valleys.

Now, the joy radiated by the younger, energetic Sandler is gone, leaving only the wreckage and the sad specter of a once top-notch talent desperately clinging to the glory days of yore.

The Upside: There are a few funny moments.

The Downside: The movie is one long example of product placement, with a moronic and condescending story.

On the Side: Watch Sandler’s November 9 appearance on Letterman. It’s way more entertaining than the movie.

Movie Review: Like Crazy

If you make a feature-length movie in one month and decide not to give your actors a script, you can expect to see some flaws in the final product. The good news for Like Crazy, winner of this year’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize for dramatic feature and the latest film from 28-year-old writer/director Drake Doremus, is that the movie’s positives far outweigh its negatives. What begins as a stereotypical story about first loves evolves into an exquisite tale exploring a complex and realistic post-9/11 long-distance international relationship.

Felicity Jones is outstanding as Anna, a Brit in Los Angeles on a student visa. Anna quickly succeeds in drawing the interest of the quiet but charming Jacob (Anton Yelchin), an American with a bright future in furniture design. The two fall deeply in love with each other, so much so that Anna decides to ignore her expired visa and stay with Jacob for two extra months, a mistake that sets the stage for the rest of the movie. After a brief visit home to England, Anna returns to Los Angeles, where immigration officials use her previous visa violation to deny her access to the country. Anna is sent home on the next available plane, devastated and unable to see the man she loves. Jacob’s left stranded at the airport, stunned with the unexpected turn of events. What follows is a series of back and forth visits between Anna and Jacob that test the strength of their commitment to each other over several years.

Ironically, the lack of a script is what makes Like Crazy so good, allowing the actors to turn in largely improvisational performances that keep a heartfelt story real and intense from beginning to end. The acting is so natural and the relationship between Anna and Jacob rings so true that it’s as if the characters are friends of yours. In some ways, Like Crazy doesn’t even seem like a movie. Rather, it’s a relevant love story you need to feel to appreciate. Doremus’s willingness to let Jones and Yelchin improvise pays off, resulting in a film that explores the murkier areas of love. Anna and Jacob’s frustrating and confusing relationship spirals into surprising areas that ultimately leaves you with one question: What’s going to happen to these two people?

Like Crazy does have its shortcomings. Doremus’s attempt to cover a six-plus year relationship in just 90 minutes often comes up short, resulting in some awkward and sometimes hard-to-follow passage-of-time transitions, especially during the film’s second half. Although Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin both shine in their roles, there are moments when Yelchin’s quiet demeanor is too understated for certain situations that his character faces. In addition, Jacob’s decision to become involved in an on-and-off relationship with his American work partner Sam (Jennifer Lawrence) seems inconsistent for a guy who is so smitten with Anna.

Regardless of the minor imperfections, Doremus’s splendid filmmaking makes Like Crazyone of the most honest love stories seen on film during the 2000s. An early montage showing Anna and Jacob literally spending the summer in bed is a joy to watch, as is a later series of silent point of view shots on a London subway as the couple travels to the airport. Handheld cameras and numerous shots of Anna and Jacob from behind windows and through doors add to the sense that you’re right there with them, feeling everything they’re feeling as they experience the challenges of international love in the modern world.

Director Drake Doremus took some major creative risks with Like Crazy. In the hands of a lesser filmmaker and cast, the movie would have likely been a train wreck of epic proportions. Instead, if the Academy offered an Oscar for the category of Best Drama Filmed in a Hurry Without a Script, Like Crazy would coast to an easy win this year.

Bonafide Face Product Review: Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel

I’m often told that I don’t look as if I need an acne cleanser—and that’s the whole point. I want to keep breakouts at bay, so my acne-prone skin can remain inconspicuous.

Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel is my latest pimple-fighting cleanser of the month. And I must say, this acne gel cleanser is making it difficult for next month’s successor!

Here are the details for Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel:

The claim:

Get a satisfying deep down cleanse with Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, a penetrating facial wash that won’t strip your skin. Salicylic acid purifies your pores and sloughs away dead skin while controlling sebum production. This soap-free formula also contains soothing eperuline and glycyrrhizinate acid to reduce inflammation and redness, promoting a clear, matte complexion.

My Results:
You can’t help but to notice the large, green bottle near my sink being mistaken for hand cleanser. An acne cleanser this size (at this price) is a rarity and a dead ringer for not being effective, or so I thought. I was dead wrong.

One strong pump of the clean scent gel cleanser is enough to slather across my entire face. The Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel lathers quickly and without burning or any other irritations.

I’m battling acne, so I don’t want to worry about blotchiness or red spots afterwards. A quick rinse reveals a squeaky clean (think after toner feel) but not tight face.

After three weeks, I noticed my skin was calm, less flared with acne, and smoother. Great results, with only using a minimal amount of the cleanser–just my kind of acne cleanser.

Bling Factor:

Pros: Gentle, effective, mild scent, inexpensive

Cons: None

A Review of Chicken of the Sea Salmon Cups: 80 Calories

I love salmon and when I came across a pack of Chicken of the Sea salmon cups in my local favorite grocery store, I was thrilled. These looked so good! I decided to purchase them, try them out and write a product review all about my personal experience with them. Here is what I discovered!

I bought one Chicken of the Sea salmon cups pack for around two dollars. Each pack has two individual serving sized cups in it. The lure of this product, for me, was that it is portable. It also requires no refrigeration. These are easy to take on the go with me and great for bag lunches. I discovered that these are low cal, low in fat, protein rich and omega 3 rich, also. This salmon is wild caught. I love many Chicken of the Sea brand food products. I could not wait to taste this one!

This salmon is very different from canned salmon. It is pink salmon, but it is boneless and skinless. You also do not need to drain this salmon before eating. Fabulous! It is packed in water. When I tasted this salmon, I loved it! It is great right from the cup. In large chunks and very tasty. The bright pink color is spectacular, as is the flavor of this salmon. It has a clean taste and reminds me a bit of tuna, but with salmon. This is a very cool product. I like having it plain, but I also like it with sauce and ketchup. Served with crackers, it is delicious. I can also add a bit of mayo to the cup and make a quick on the go salmon salad. This is a great travel snack. It can be easily eaten and it is filling. Not to mention healthy.
