Red Meat is Not as Healthy as We Are Told

This report filed by the BBC confirms what has long been rumoured, mans love affair with red meat is doing us no good.

Despite the spruiking of Sam Neil and Sam Kekovich, red meat is not bringing us the benefits that they profess. In fact it is almost certainly a key contrbutor to early deaths from heart disease, cancer and strokes.

And “an essential part of the diet 3 or 4 times a week.” I think not. Only if heart disease and premature death are also essential to the evolution of the species.

A chemical found in red meat helps explain why eating too much steak, mince and bacon is bad for the heart, say US scientists.

A study in the journal Nature Medicine showed that carnitine in red meat was broken down by bacteria in the gut.

This kicked off a chain of events that resulted in higher levels of cholesterol and an increased risk of heart disease.

Dieticians warned there may be a risk to people taking carnitine supplements.

There has been a wealth of studies suggesting that regularly eating red meat may be damaging to health.

In the UK, the government recommends eating no more than 70g of red or processed meat a day – the equivalent of two slices of bacon.

Saturated fat and the way processed meat is preserved are thought to contribute to heart problems. However, this was not thought to be the whole story.

“The cholesterol and saturated fat content of lean red meat is not that high, there’s something else contributing to increases in cardiovascular risk,” lead researcher Dr Stanley Hazen told the BBC.
Gut bugs

Experiments on mice and people showed that bacteria in the gut could eat carnitine.

Carnitine was broken down into a gas, which was converted in the liver to a chemical called TMAO.

In the study, TMAO was strongly linked with the build-up of fatty deposits in blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease and death.

Dr Hazen, from the Cleveland Clinic, said TMAO was often ignored: “It may be a waste product but it is significantly influencing cholesterol metabolism and the net effect leads to an accumulation of cholesterol.

“The findings support the idea that less red meat is better.

“I used to have red meat five days out of seven, now I have cut it way back to less than once every two weeks or so.”

He said the findings raised the idea of using a probiotic yogurt to change the balance of bacteria in the gut.

Reducing the number of bacteria that feed on carnitine would in theory reduce the health risks of red meat.

Vegetarians naturally have fewer bacteria which are able to break down carnitine than meat-eaters.

Looking after your health is Australian or at least it should be. Don’t be fooled by these guys telling you that the old ways are the best. They were the best, when we didn’t no any better, now we know more. That’s evolution.

Don’t forget that red meat is also dangerous to the planet. Millions of acres of rainforest have been torn down to make way for grazing cattle. This means that there is more CO2 in the air and to make matter worse the cattle turn the green stuff they eat into methane which is even worse for the atmosphere than CO2.

If you must eat red meat, cut it back to the 70G a day, as recommended in the report, or save it up for a decent size cut once per week or once every two weeks. You know it makes sense.

Wealth Inequality Effects Health and Life Expectancy

We include this video on this site not only because we would like to highlight the inequality of wealth distribution, but also because there is no doubt that the wealthier are healthier. The rich eat better, get better medical care, have more leisure time to exercise and undoubtedly live longer and happier lives.

It is time that something was done about the inequality and I believe that the availability of social media and viral campaigns can help us to achieve a more fair distribution, to use a an Aussie expression “A fair shake of the sauce bottle”

And many of you will be surprised to find out where a huge amount of that global wealth is spent. It is spent on war and “defence”. Why is it spent on war and the military? Because war makes lots of money for some people and the victors gain more money and power to perpetuate the status quo of the few holding most of the money and the authority to control and influence the rest with the power that it brings to them. It is an ever increasing circle of misery for many and joy for the few.

To prove this is not only the case in America we have included a report relating to the UK Sunday Times rich list. This details not only who holds the bulk of the wealth but also in which industries they work.

As much of British prime industry was destroyed during the Thatcher era, not surprisingly many of those that head the rich list are employed in the banking, hedge funds and private equity industries that created the financial crisis of recent years. Also, unsurprisingly, they have not been held accountable for that. When you have the money you have the power and that means you do not pay.

Do what you can to turn it around, even if it is only spreading the word and that is as easy as pressing a button or pasting a link on social media these days.

This is the strategy that the media uses every day to point the blame for the problems of the world at immigrants, the unemployed and those on benefits.

Numerous stories in the press, both the printed media and Television, like to lay the blame for working people’s woes on what they like to call scroungers – the unemployed, immigrants, people on welfare, dole bludgers, the list goes on. This is a perfect example of the divide and conquer technique that we described above in The Parable of the Rich Man’s Biscuits.

There are many advantages to going to a gym to get fit, they have all of the equipment that you need to start off with.

At a gym you will probably be coached by a personal trainer who can put together a “personal” fitness plan for you.

Many people find that the discipline of leaving the house, or work, to go to a gym helps in maintaining a fitness regime. As does working out with other people for some.

So, if you are looking for any of those things, by all means sign up for a gym membership and a personal trainer and go for it.

Don’t Join a Gym

On the other hand there are some drawbacks and it really is a case of different strokes for different folks.

Some people do not have a regular schedule that allows them to be at a gym at the specified time once, twice or several times a week.

Many people sign up and do not go to the gym, which can be expensive, as most gyms will not refund your membership. The same is true of personal trainers; they do not come cheap either.

By the way, beware of personal trainers that are not expensive, as it probably means your training is not that personal. He or she has probably written the same workout for hundreds of people before you and will just let you get on with it, after an initial session.

Another drawback for some of us is that we do not enjoy the idea of training with other people around and watching, fearing that we might be judged by them.

So if any of those issues sound familiar to you, do not worry there are lots of ways to get fit at home. You do not have to buy all of the expensive equipment that they have at the gym. You can do lots exercises using your own body weight, or with the aid of some basic low priced items.
